Meditations on the Anthropocene continues an ongoing relationship between London’s Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall (BGV) and IC-98, the artists that represented Finland at La Biennale di Venice, 2015.
IC-98 is a Finnish artist duo comprising Patrik Söderlund (b. 1974) and Visa Suonpää (b. 1968) whose projects combine research, text, drawing and animation. The exhibition profiles their two most recent works: Nekropolis and Abendland (Hours, Years, Aeons) the work made for the Venice Biennale. The exhibition includes screenings of earlier works that can be viewed on BGV’s FlatScreen Programme in the Ragged Canteen Gallery, providing an overview of IC98’s long-term engagement with ideas of global deep memory and the impact of human intervention on the natural world.
Meditations on the Anthropocene provides context for and coincides with IC-98’s commission for Victoria & Albert Museum London (1-7 February 2017). The V&A commission is part of a festival titled ‘Collecting Europe’ that imagines a view of Europe 2000 years from now.
IC-98 is best known for animated film installations, which combine classical drawing and digital effects, often depicting landscapes shaped by interlaced forces of nature and technology, navigation and exploitation, climate and migration. IC-98 are currently developing site-specific, long-duration environmental projects involving landscape and plant life.
