After a successful inaugural year in 2010, South London Art Map is pleased to announce the return of GIFTED: A weekend of contemporary Art & Design in Deptford. An eclectic mix of art & design featuring work by over 200 emerging artists and designer-makers, over 2 days, all in one postcode.

Tucked safely away from the nightmare before Christmas that is the West End. Deptford’s GIFTED weekend is offering an alternative to flat packed festivities. Find everything from limited edition prints & unique upcycled furniture to original fine art by some of London’s most creative emerging talents, all the while enjoying our Southern hospitality in the form of mulled wine and mince pies. Sashaying between the unique objects of Deptford’s design studios and the confrontational contemporary art of our non-profits, all doors are open in this unlikeliest of creative hubs.

This year’s highlights include: Award winning designer-maker incubator *COCKPIT ARTS Christmas open studios featuring new works by emerging design talent, the expanding and ever popular FAIRCHARM FAIR returning for the second year with over 40 stallholders selling their wares, also look for a collaborative pop-up exhibition inspired by Darwin’s Zoonomia in block A of Faircharm. Artist’s opening their studio doors include CREEKSIDE, ART HUB with APT’s salon hang of studio members work all available to buy with a price cap. Stepping out of Creekside along the high street BEARSPACE present PRINT & DESIGN NOW! 2011 featuring over 150 selected works by emerging artists, Raw Visions at LEWISHAM ARTHOUSE with a group show of 15 international artists, and further afield THE AGENCY reinforces its reputation for showing emerging international talent with shows by Eduardo Padilha and Deepa Chudasama and THE STEPHEN LAWRENCE GALLERY hosting its current ambitious project Linear B.

Deptford Tour: GIFTED Art & Design Weekend Special (Pay What You Like!) Saturday 3rd December | 2-4pm

If you are just looking to soak up the ambience, and discover Deptford’s hidden gems, South London Art Map has just the tonic with one of our increasingly popular Pay What You Can Art Tours. This edition, lead by local curator Rachel Price will take you meandering Deptford’s studios, non-profit and artist led spaces often cunningly disguised as industrial estates. Ensure you don’t miss a trick with SLAM.

*Tour attendees will also receive half price entry in Cockpit Arts annual Christmas open studio event, which showcases the very best of South London’s Design talent.

On these tours there is no limit (either way!) for the amount you pay. The main thing is that you pay what you can! SLAM suggests £5 as an average donation.

Cockpit Arts - Christmas Open Studios

We are very pleased to be including COCKPIT ARTS as part of GIFTED this year. Join us as part of our GIFTED special walking art tour on Saturday 3rd December and explore these world class studios for half price!

60+ talented designers lovingly make very cool fashion accessories, jewellery, homeware and so much more. Each piece has a story to be told and visitors have a joyous time doing their Christmas shop. Come on in and see behind the scenes… Christmas Attractions include:

Trinity ∴ has kindly donated one of Christina Mitrentse’s new editions specially created for their recent show ‘Emblem – Deconstructed and Destroyed: A Homage To John Latham’ The piece pays a devoted tribute to John Latham’s book relief sculpture which penetrates the window fronting Flat Time House. Produced exclusively for Trinity ∴ to accompany the Billboard installation and gallery exhibition. This marks Vol.II of Mitrentse’s Add to My Library project, a series of participatory shows designed to provoke change in cultural institutions and the function of the material book, in association with the campaign to save public libraries in the UK and beyond.

Mitrentse is currently showing in and has co-curated the current exhibition 'LINEAR B - A memorial project responding to works in the collection of Greek artist Nikos Alexiou' at The Stephen Lawrence Gallery, University of Greenwich which forms part of SLAM's upcoming art tour.
